“That was wonderful!” Myrtle enthused as they left the park.

Lady Flora and her friends had settled on a date for their meeting, and Myrtle practically buzzed with excitement. She’d had to push her own future plans to the back of her mind while she concentrated on Lilah, but it did seem—as Simeon had said—that she would be able to do it all.

She just had to partition her time. She was a mathematician; it should be simple enough. Time to attend to Lilah’s debut, time to work on her own business, time to pose for Simeon.

All manageable.

“I should have thought of introducing you to Aunt Flora earlier,” he said. “She is precisely the sort of person who would benefit from your help.”

Myrtle hadn’t dared to think, not really, that she would be able to succeed at what she wanted. A 37 1/2 percent chance of success was less than half.

But now, with her first actual meeting set up, and with Simeon’s charm smoothing her path, she felt a spark of hope. Perhaps there would be happiness for her, after all, even without following the traditional path most other young ladies did.

“She came along at precisely the right time,” Myrtle assured him. “I am feeling as though Lilah’s and Miss Jones’s debut will go relatively well, and we’ve got most of the major things sorted. If I had met Lady Flora earlier, I might not have been able to pay so much attention.”

He gave her a warm smile. “Thank you for saying so. I know it can be difficult when you want to do something that’s a little bit different from everyone else.”

She took his arm and leaned against it. Woof sat at their feet as she spoke. “Tell me about your choice. How did you come to know you could be a successful artist?”

He gave a rueful chuckle. “I’m not successful yet. I still think about money, and sometimes I have to forego certain items in order to pay for my art materials.”

“What kinds of items? I could help—”

“No,” he replied, cutting her off. “You paid me to escort you to London, and you paid three times what I was to originally get from your brother.” He snorted. “And then you bargained with your brother on my behalf. All of that money will go a long way, since I have so few expenses.”

“But you will let—” she began.

“Yes. Though isn’t the whole point of you setting up your business because you don’t have enough money yourself?”

She wrinkled her nose. “Yes, but I have more money, I believe, than you do. It is all a matter of perspective, isn’t it?” She exhaled in frustration. “I know I am more fortunate than most people. I know that. But that doesn’t mean I have to be satisfied with my good fortune. I want to improve upon it, or more accurately, I want to make my good fortune suit me.” She shrugged. “Which means no marriage, no encumbrances, and a way to help others like me.
